What about the loss of hormones with aging?

The loss of hormones with age is inevitable and may start even in the 30s! While aging is a natural process, we can meaningfully intervene with organ deterioration with Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT), which makes your efforts to maintain youthfulness much easier to achieve.

Not Just "Sex Hormones"

Most people associate Testosterone with men and Estrogen with women. BOTH sexes benefit from vital neurosteroids/hormones like DHEA, Estradiol, Progesterone, Testosterone and Oxytocin. All of these hormones are essential for the growth, function and maintenance of your brain and all tissues! The key is to achieve the optimal balance for an individual, because everyone’s body composition, metabolism and goals are different.

Besides maintaining reproductive organs and sexual functions, neurosteroids have numerous important functions to keep you healthy. Neurosteroids help you:

  • Maintain brain power: cognitive, memory, reaction speed
  • Maintain tissue health/strength: skin, hair, bone, muscle, heart
  • Improve insulin sensitivity: ↓ belly fat, ↓ risk of diabetes and obesity
  • Reduce blood pressure: improve endothelial function
  • Prevent atherosclerosis: reduce risk of heart attack and stroke

  • Estradiol / Estriol
  • Progresterone
  • Oxytocin
  • Testosterone

OXYTOCIN - the LOVE hormone

During orgasm, a rush of oxytocin (and vasopressin in men) is released from the brain. Oxytocin boosts sexual arousal and promotes bonding and euphoria between couples. That’s why it is also called the “cuddling hormone”. There are many other less known benefits of oxytocin:

  • Eases stress
  • Reduces alcohol cravings
  • Induces sleep
  • Promotes attachment (secreted especially in abundance during breast-feeding but in lesser amounts whenever we hug each other!)
  • Solidifies relationships
  • Repairs aged muscle cells

That’s why there are numerous clinical trials underway to explore the utility of oxytocin, not just for sexual dysfunctional disorders, but also for chronic mood disorders.

Oxytocin is a broad range hormone that reaches every organ. It is safe, and it has no associations to cancer. A really exciting fact about oxytocin is that a plethora of research studies are underway to investigate its anti-aging effects!

muscle tissues

The healthy muscle tissue on the left is from a young mouse. Muscle tissue's ability to repair itself decreases with age, as displayed by the middle image of old muscle tissue, which shows a lower density of muscle fibers, increased scar tissue and inflammation. The addition of oxytocin to the blood of old mice rapidly rejuvenates the old muscle, as shown on the right. (Photos by Wendy Cousin and Christian Elabd, UC Berkeley)

Benefits of Hormone Therapy

  • Increases lean body mass
  • Reduces abdominal fat
  • Improves sugar and fat metabolism
  • Strengthens blood vessels
  • Maintains bone density
  • Improves mood
  • Maintains cognition and memory
  • Improves sleep
  • Reduces skin winkling and hair loss
  • Better Sex

Menopause

Menopause is a hormone-deficiency state with known harmful consequences for quality of life and health. Therefore, replacement of lost hormones for menopause is medically necessary. Peri-menopause can start as early as 15 years before menopause. Many women in their mid-30s do not realize that they are experiencing symptoms of hormonal deficiency associated with problems from sex hormone production and regulation. Many symptoms are related to lower levels of estrogen.

Why Bioidentical Hormone Replacement (BHRT)?

Not all Hormone Replacement Therapies are alike!

Bioidentical hormone therapy does not have the cardiovascular or breast cancer risks seen with PremPro®, which contains Progestin.

Since early 1990s, research has shown that Progestins have multiple adverse effects for menopausal women, including increased risk of heart disease, clotting, breast cancer and gallbladder disease. Estradiol replacement is safe when it is transdermal and accompanied by sufficient progesterone and testosterone.

I no longer have hot flashes so why do I need estrogen?

The benefits of Estrogen go beyond sex organs, reproduction and bones!

Post menopausal women with estrogen deficiency are vulnerable to

  • Obesity
  • Metabolic syndrome and Diabetes
  • Cancers (breast, colon, liver)
  • Osteoarthritis / Osteoporosis
  • Atherosclerosis (blocking and hardened vessels)
  • Alzheimer's Dementia
  • Neuro-Inflammatory Diseases
  • Sleep disturbance / Insomnia
  • Systemic Inflammation
  • Immune Dysregulation

Andropause

andropause graph

The Massachusetts Male Aging Study showed a 30-year fall in Total Testosterone in men averaging 48%. Decline in Free Testosterone (bioactive form of Testosterone) is even more significant, up to 85%.

There is a 1% decline each year in most men after age 30.

Effects of Testosterone Restoration

  • Improves energy, lean muscle mass, mood, motivation and well-being
  • Reduces depression & anxiety
  • Improves sexual desire, sensation and stamina
  • Improves physical endurance and muscle strength
  • Improves flow-mediated arterial dilation, therefore decreases risk of heart attack

In men, testosterone replacement with estradiol results in greater improvement in memory and increase in bone density!
